Torricelli Range · Papua New Guinea

This is the Tenkile.

First described in 1989, this critically endangered tree kangaroo numbered as few as 100 animals — hunted to the brink of extinction. Working with over 12,000 people from 50 villages, we don't just save tree kangaroos. We save people, culture, and the planet.

Our vision

The people of PNG and their places are respected, valued, protected and enhanced — their natural resources, habitats, ecosystems, communities, cultures and local economies.

Our mission

To save lives in PNG — the lives of people, animals, and their places.

Our strategy

It started with tree kangaroos. It grew into a whole mountain range.

Tree kangaroos were our flagship species — a way to achieve broader conservation outcomes. Today we're protecting the entire Torricelli Mountain Range and all its biodiversity. It is worth saving.

50%
of PNG's bird species live here
65%
of PNG's frog & reptile species
40%
of PNG's mammal species
13,000
local people across 50 villages

4 mammals critically endangered · 3 bird species endangered. None of this is possible without the people who own the Torricelli Range — whose livelihoods we support so communities stay engaged, and so the forest is never sold to logging or mining.

What we set out to do

Seven things worth saving

A feature documentary

Into the Jungle

Zookeepers Jim and Jean Thomas braved the steamy jungles of Papua New Guinea to save a little-known tree kangaroo from extinction. Only one hundred were left in the world.

Featuring Sir David Attenborough, Jane Goodall & Tim Flannery.
